Frequently Asked Questions

When will the database be complete
We are hoping for the database to be listing the majority of dance opportunities by summer 2010. We can only do this if the individuals that provide opportunities help us by letting us know of what is out there. If you provide dance you can register as a teacher or organisation using the 'register' tab above. Alternatively if you know someone that provides dance or you attend a dance class please direct the teacher to this website so they can also register.
-
Why is dance good for me?
Dance is recognised by the government and the NHS as a great way of getting more active, which can help to reduce obesity and improve health. Being active can also reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer and many other chronic diseases. At the same time, you can have fun and meet new people.
-
How often should I dance to feel the benefits?
This is totally up to you! The Chief Medical Officer recommends that for health benefits, adults should achieve a total of at least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity at least five times a week. Part or all of that might be spent dancing.
-
How do I use the directory?
Simply enter a dance type (or leave it at any) and your postcode. A table will show all results in your area. You can filter these according to time of day, costs, childcare, level, accessibility, and much more. Advanced search facilities are available to help you narrow down the options.
-
How do I know what style of dance would be right for me?
You can look through our A-Z of dance styles, but you should try a few different classes until you find the one that is right for you! Dance is so varied. Just because you might find that one dance style doesn’t suit you, you could well find another that you can love for life!
-
I’m an organisation/teacher – why should I register?
This site aims to be the number one resource for anyone who wants to find and try a dance class. We provide members of the public with a one-stop shop, where they can easily see dance opportunities in their area and pick the one that is right for them in one easy step. By registering you are able to associate yourself with the Champions, and more importantly, allow local people to find out about your opportunity!
-
I only run one class a week, is it worth me registering it?
Of course! We want to list every existing dance opportunity on this site. Register now – there may be someone just round the corner who doesn’t know you are there!
-
Is it free to use?
It’s completely free. No-one pays to use any element of our website, no matter who they are.
-
How will you evaluate your work?
We will use surveys, such as the Active People Survey, to measure any increase in the number of people dancing in England. In addition, we will use a full evaluation programme to assess the numbers of people reached through mass-participation events.
-
Are the Dance Champions still planning to run their own events?
Dance Champions are adding value to existing events in London, South East England, East of England and Yorkshire and Humberside. We hope to commission our own events in the North West, North East, Midlands and South West later this summer.
-
Will those stop people wanting to come to my class?
Not at all! The events are about promoting different dance styles, and rely on local providers to highlight their own provision. We are seeking follow-up and want to allow members of the public to find out where they can participate in dance regularly. The Dance Champions Group want to signpost people to existing classes that dance providers run.
-
Can Dance Champions visit my class?
All of the Dance Champions are engaged in the Group for free, and are really busy. Therefore, they take part in DCG recognised events. You are very welcome to contact Dance Champions’ agents through the Internet, but we cannot guarantee they will be able to visit individual events or classes.
